As a part of our ongoing Stories of Hope blog series, we want to share with you our February 2023 Impact Report as a way to say “thank you” to all our supporters who make our work possible.

This past month, your donations have provided funds for an educational field trip to Washington, D.C. for students who attend Martin County Middle School in Kentucky, among so much more.

Beyond what our donors already provide to children through our sponsorship program, additional donations to our Special Funds and Special Projects allow us to help families and communities as well, often in times of crisis.

Just in this past month, you have:

– Provided funds to purchase food for an entire month for children at Santa Isabel Seton in Guatemala

– Provided funds for an educational field trip to Washington, D.C. for students who attend Martin County Middle School in Kentucky

– Provided funds to purchase food for children at the Armenian Secondary School in Anjar, Lebanon

– Provided funds to purchase food for a month for children at the Dandora Community Center in Kenya

– Provided food for the month of February for 200 children at St. John’s Community Center in Kenya

– Provided funds to purchase food for a month for 25 children at the Fortune’s Children Center in the Philippines

– Provided winter boots and socks for students at the Dennehotso Boarding School in Arizona

– Provided emergency funding for food for a newly enrolled sponsored child and her family at Morgan County Middle School

– Provided space heaters for a family in need at Baca Dlo’ay azhi Community School in New Mexico

Along with so much more, your donations provided funds to help repair damaged pipes for drinking water in the home of a family in our sponsorship program at Inez Elementary School just in this past month.

– Provided funds to help repair damaged pipes for drinking water in the home of a family in our sponsorship program at Inez Elementary School

Children Incorporated’s Hope In Action Fund supports our affiliated sites in a variety of ways, from emergency relief to construction projects and beyond. As one of our oldest and most valuable funds helping children and families living in poverty, it is amazing how this special fund touches lives in so many positive ways.

“With the Hope In Action Funds, I started a Fall garden at the school that includes kale, lettuce, beets, collard greens, cabbage, rainbow chard, arugula, peas, and pole beans. It has been so much fun!”

Today, we hear from our volunteer coordinator, Sydney, at G.H. Reid Elementary School, about how our Hope In Action Fund allowed her to create a new school garden, and how it has not only been educational for students, but a lot of fun as well!

A letter from Sydney

“With the Hope In Action Funds, I started a Fall garden at the school that includes kale, lettuce, beets, collard greens, cabbage, rainbow chard, arugula, peas, and pole beans. It has been so awesome!”

The school garden is bringing smiles to the faces of children at G.H. Reid.

“I am sharing a photo of a student in the Children Incorporated sponsorship program named Maria.* Maria was having a tough morning a few weeks ago, and her teacher asked if I could spend some time with her so she could have a break from the classroom. I was watering the garden at the time, so I asked Maria if she’d be interested in helping me.”

“While we tended the garden, I taught Maria about the different parts of the plants (leaves, roots, stems) and showed her how to water directly at the roots. We found some beets that were ready, so she pulled them up. Afterward, I called her mom to see if they would eat beets at home. Her mom was so excited, she happily accepted! Maria took the beets home with her that day.”

Meeting Giselle

“I have also shared a picture of another sponsored child named Giselle.* Giselle used to have a garden at her house in El Salvador, but she doesn’t have enough yard space at her new apartment in Richmond to have one. She loves to help me in the garden and said when she’s grown up, she wants to have plants of her own.”

“We also were able to invite fourth and fifth grade classes out to the garden last week on ‘Hamburger Day’ to add fresh picked lettuce to their hamburgers. The kids thought it was so cool! They were able to try arugula, red leaf lettuce, kale (soaked in water, salt, & olive oil), Great Lakes Head lettuce, and a salad bowl mix.”

Located in the easternmost portion of Africa, Ethiopia is ecologically diverse, comprising desert steppes, highland plateaus, towering mountains, and tropical rainforest. Archeological evidence suggests that people have called this land home for tens of
thousands of years. With one of the first known alphabet systems, Ethiopia is truly a cradle of civilization.

Your support makes all our work possible for Ethiopian children in crisis.

Today, it is the world’s most populous landlocked nation. Its wealth of natural resources lends itself to Ethiopia’s primarily agriculture-based economy. Coffee is its primary export. However, in a land already susceptible to earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and droughts, the turmoil brought about by political instability, lack of adequate medical services, and a general deficiency in human rights have plunged much of the nation into abject poverty. Diseases such as malaria, typhoid, and dengue fever are tragically common as many Ethiopians lack access to safe water and are not able to practice safe hygiene and sanitation. Lack of education is both a result of and a contributing factor to the widespread poverty plaguing Ethiopia.

Challenges for Children in Ethiopia

In Ethiopia, children’s very lives and futures are at risk, as poverty leads to lack of educational and basic resources. Right now, vulnerable children in Ethiopia need your help.

Nearly 36 million children in Ethiopia are living in poverty
88 per cent of children in Ethiopia under the age of 18 lack access to basic services
Children from poor households and children in rural areas have far less access to clean water
than those from more affluent households
Less than 20% of children from very poor households finish primary school
Less than 25% of children living in poverty receive all basic vaccinations

Thanks to caring people like you, Children Incorporated has helped thousands of impoverished children in Ethiopia since 1964.

We work with our volunteer coordinators in local communities to provide health and nutrition, education, hygiene items, clothes, shoes, and other essentials that help children and families rise above the poverty in which they live.

Our strategy is to focus on individual children through our sponsorship program, ensuring they are receiving exactly what they need on a regular basis. Your support makes all our work possible for Ethiopian children in crisis.
