Founded in 1609, Richmond is among the nation’s oldest cities, steeped in history that spans the colonial era, Civil War era, and beyond. It is situated upon the picturesque James River, which winds its way from Appalachian tributaries into the Chesapeake Bay. It is also here in Richmond that Mrs. Jeanne Clarke Wood first founded Children Incorporated out of her home in 1964. Despite its wealth of history, culture, diversity, and the arts, many areas of Richmond struggle beneath poverty and its socioeconomic effects. The community served by Cardinal Elementary School is no exception. The student body is characterized by low socioeconomic status and all that it entails, including lack of necessary school supplies, clothing, and other resources children need to perform their best academically. Additionally, for many students, these poverty-related setbacks are only amplified by a language barrier, as Cardinal Elementary has a soaring Spanish-speaking student population. The dedicated staff of Cardinal Elementary School strives to provide a safe haven where children receive a sound education, healthy meals, and the opportunity to rise above the difficult socioeconomic circumstances from which they come.
