Training Our New Coordinators in Washington, DC

Training Our New Coordinators in Washington, DC
Children, Incorporated takes pride in sending the maximum sponsor contributions possible to directly benefit the children we serve. One of the primary ways we keep our overhead costs low is by administering our programs through a corps of volunteer project coordinators. In fact, CI has more than 400 volunteer coordinators in our partner schools, orphanages and community centers around the world! These caring individuals serve as our “eyes and ears” in their own communities and effectively distribute the funds so that each child receives the critical items he or she needs most.

Recently, CI staff members Renee Kube, Ron Carter and Emily Halata traveled to Washington, DC, to train several new coordinators at three of the public schools in which we operate. The coordinators shared many challenges faced by the students they assist, including high rates of teen pregnancy, HIV and parental unemployment. Academically, their test scores are often low, and many struggle just to get to school since bus transportation is not provided and the cost of public transportation is prohibitive.

Other coordinators shared a need for social activities for the students, citing that many of them had never been outside their immediate neighborhood let alone be exposed to other cultures. Coordinator Kim Bookard mentioned that her dream project would be “getting on a bus and taking the kids to a different zip code.”

The training not only educated our new coordinators but also offered this insightful glimpse into some of the many challenges that our inner city population faces. We are grateful to these and the hundreds of other coordinators who help administer our programs in the United States and 22 other countries around the world. Your $28 per month goes so much further thanks to their commitment to the children and their attentiveness to their unique needs.

If you are not already a sponsor, please join in our efforts to end the cycle of poverty and provide hope to children around the world. Click here to help a child in need today!
